El Grande is a classic area control game set in 15th century Spain where players take on the roles of Grandes (powerful lords) vying for control of various regions. Players use their caballeros (knights) to gain majority control over the nine regions of medieval Spain while the king's power is flagging. It won the Spiel des Jahres award in 1996 and is considered the granddaddy of area majority games.

The Verdict

based on 22 reviews

Positive 0%
Elegant and simple rules that are easy to teach, yet lead to complex and meaningful decisions.
High level of player interaction and tension, creating a dynamic and confrontational experience.
Significant strategic and tactical depth that keeps the game engaging.
A timeless and influential design that is considered a benchmark for the area control genre.
The direct confrontation and 'nasty' gameplay may not appeal to all player types.
A potential for a 'runaway leader' problem, where an early lead can be difficult to overcome.
The experience can be less optimal with 2 or 5 players, shining best with 3 or 4.
Some find the game can feel more tactical than strategic, with turns between scoring rounds feeling less impactful.

I definitely recommend you do so, because while it’s the kind of game that may not be played more than once or twice a year, it’s definitely the kind that we’ll still be playing for years to come.”
