(1997)Hans im Glück, Fantasy Flight Games, Mayfair Games, Z-Man Games, Pegasus Spiele
Set in the ancient fertile crescent, players build civilizations through tile placement using four different leaders (farming, trading, religion, and government) to collect victory points in corresponding categories. Regarded by many as Reiner Knizia's masterpiece, it's a highly interactive and strategic game depicting the rise and fall of empires.

Writing a review of Tigris & Euphrates (T&E) feels like writing a review of chess—it’s indisputably great, and, to paraphrase a friend of mine: “any problem you have with chess is a problem with you.” The same goes for T&E.
Tigris & Euphrates is a true classic of tabletop game design. It has a paucity of rules, and a banquet of possibilities.
The 1997 game Tigris and Euphrates, by prolific designer Reiner Knizia, is an all-time classic in the genre, an abstract strategy game that’s easy to learn but that involves plenty of strategy and differs every time you play. It’s an essential purchase for any boardgame collection.
The reviewer considers "Tigris & Euphrates" an amazing, incredible, and fantastically well-designed game, giving it a perfect five out of five score.
It's an amazing game, but you really need to be willing to learn its intricacies.
Tigris & Euphrates is a true classic of tabletop game design. It has a paucity of rules, and a banquet of possibilities.
On the other hand, it’s a game that after countless plays and almost 30 years I still very much enjoy playing and get something new out of every time. It’s one of the few games that are this old and still worth having in your collection today.
But honestly, the rest of the game is so ingenious and clever that I still give it a solid 9. I would play this any time.
The reviewer highlights "Tigris & Euphrates" as a uniquely chaotic and constantly shifting game where kingdoms rise and fall, rewarding daring plays and offering a dynamic experience where players never feel entirely out of the game, despite its brutal nature.
The reviewer highly recommends the new edition of Tigris & Euphrates, considering it the definitive version due to its improved components, reduced table space, and engaging new variants, noting that it has aged incredibly well despite minor issues with flimsy player boards.
Tigris & Euphrates is a fun and highly replayable game with unique mechanics, notably its balanced scoring system and intricate strategy, despite an initial learning curve due to its distinct gameplay.
The reviewer praises Tigris & Euphrates as a fantastic and timeless design with clean mechanisms and engaging conflict, noting that despite its dry and deterministic nature, which may not appeal to everyone, it earns high praise for its exceptional gameplay.
